N RF Surge Arrestor's Key Points Parameters

N RF Surge Arrestors, or lightning arrestors/surge suppressors, are important electronic components that help protect sensitive radio and sensing electronics with external components or cables from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or other types of surges. The basic function of these components is to short-circuit the transmission line to ground in the event that the surge exceeds a specified input power, while allowing unimpeded operation and passage of the desired signal.

RF Surge Arrestors are typically made as inline coaxial elements with convex or concave coaxial connectors. Some RF Surge Arrestors are designed as bulkhead fixtures that can be used to protect components or enclosures from EMP or other surges, while other surge protectors can be mounted inline or to an external surface via a bracket.

N RF Surge Arrestors are typically equipped with coaxial connectors commonly used in telecom applications because telecom equipment is often installed outdoors or in areas where lightning protection systems or electrical systems may generate EMPs/surge. The gender of the coaxial connectors can be the same or mixed, depending on the specific component. If a change of gender is required, it can be used instead of an adapter.

Except for the surge suppression function, the performance of N RF Surge Arrestor is basically the same as any inline RF component. Therefore, performance parameters such as voltage VSWR, insertion loss, impedance, return loss and operating frequency range are key characteristics. However, unlike adapters, the frequency range of RF surge protectors is limited by the surge suppression technology (not the connector type or design). In addition, some RF surge protectors are also unidirectional, whereas adapters are always bi-directional.

In addition, depending on the design, the N RF Surge Arrestor can be either DC pass-through or DC blocking. If a DC-blocking surge protector is used, the actual lower cutoff frequency may be a few megahertz to a few hundred megahertz. A DC pass-through surge protector may operate at a much higher frequency than a DC blocking surge protector if in the area where the specified performance is achieved.

Key RF surge protection parameters are total power handling, inrush current, turn-on voltage, maximum voltage and multiple lightning protection capability. In some cases, such as passive intermodulation (PIM) sensitive applications, the PIM performance of the RF surge protector is also a key consideration. This is why low PIM RF surge protector models are now available to cover all common cellular frequencies. Since many RF surge protectors are also installed outdoors, environmental strength ratings are also important, with IP67 being common.
